There are a large number of sources of information related to welding in our library and beyond. Welding is used in many industrial processes and in many industries, therefore those searching for information on welding technologies can find it in the most unlikely and obscure places.
In this post the library staff limited themselves to library locations (Dewey numbers), recent publications, databases and websites clearly identified as welding focused or having substantial welding content; we give a selection of useful places to start and some strategies to help you focus your search.
Please note: all websites current as of 28/2/2009 or 1/3/2009. We excluded a large number of sites from inclusion in this post because we found they were not being actively maintained or were inactive or were commercial with minimal information (e.g. journal web sites allowing the user to search for articles but requiring a subscription or pay-per-view to see articles). We did not aim to be exhaustive in this post, and there are certain to be a number of sites and publications that people working in the field feel we should have included. But if there is a major information source excluded let us know and we will add it to a revised version of this post.
In Bathurst library
In library go to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) number 671.5 in the shelves for books, DVDs and videos dealing with welding. If we do not have it and you identify it in another TAFE NSW library by using TAFECat, we can normally obtain it for you in about three working days. - General keyword search using the word “welding” or other terms such as “ARC”, “brazing”, “arc welding”, “MIG”, “oxyacetylene” “plasma cutting”, “TIG” Be aware that a very general search using a term such as “welding” or “metal fabrication” can produce several dozens to hundreds of results.
- To be more precise and focused use a subject keyword or title keyword search; start with the correct term, e.g. “on-torch welding” and if unsuccessful consider alternate terms or phrases, if these produce no satisfactory results broaden your search or ask the library staff to assist you.
- A Power Search will give you more options in your inquiry and more control over the results produced.
- The E-Resources tab in TAFECat will allow you to access the TAFE libraries suite of databases; the major database currently for welding and materials science information is Vocational Studies Premier (see below under E-Books, online journals, research notes, standards, TAFE databases, technical notes).
